Continuing Education

Update to Handbook

Paragraph 350.1 in the 2016 Book of Discipline states, “Throughout their careers, clergy shall engage in continuing education for ministry, professional development, and spiritual formation and growth in order to lead the church in fulfilling the mission of making disciples for Jesus Christ.  This shall include carefully developed personal programs of study augmented periodically by involvement in organized educational and spiritual growth activities.”

Individuals under the mandate to receive continuing education are: all active Full Conference Members, all Provisional Members who have completed their educational requirements for entry, all active Associate Members, all Full Time Local Pastors and Part-Time Local Pastors who have completed the Course of Study requirements.  The minimum requirement is 2.5 continuing education units annually.

Each clergy is responsible for his/her own continuing education progress. This webpage acts only to establish guidelines and standards to assist in that process. Below are the following forms: book report form, small group form, audio-video-internet form and learning event form. To apply for continuing education units, please complete the appropriate form and submit it to Dr. Jay Harris.

Individual Study

Individuals may apply for continuing education units by engaging in individual study, peer group study and various learning events.  Individual study may include books, audio and video resources, on-line learning, etc.  The maximum amount of credit awarded for individual study is one (1) CEU.  The request for CEU’s must be made using the appropriate form, i.e. book report form, audio/video/internet form, etc.

Peer Group Study

Clergy wishing to form small group/peer group study may receive accreditation for the group.  The maximum amount of credit awarded for small group study is one (1) CEU.  To request CEUs for small/peer group study, persons must submit the small group form.
