Disaster Response Update: Hurricane Ian

9/26/2022

Hurricane Ian made landfall in Florida Wednesday, September 28 as a Category 4 storm. The South Georgia Conference is in contact with the Florida and South Carolina Conferences as the storm tracks north. We are also still monitoring any effects to our coastline on the eastern part of our conference. Our best response today is to wait, pray, and give.

If you have storm-related damage in your community that requires church response, please contact Conference Disaster Response Coordinator, Luis Morales (morhilll@gmail.com or 478-216-7729). If your church or church property is damaged in the storm, the pastor or Trustees chair should make two phone calls: one to the church insurance company and one to the District Superintendent.

As always, don’t self deploy to a disaster area. Our agreement with our United Methodist conferences and UMCOR is to wait until we are invited as the local region coordinates the disaster response. The South Georgia Conference has hundreds of trained ERT who are standing by, prepared to deploy upon invitation.

Your financial gift to UMCOR is especially appreciated. You may give through any United Methodist Church in the South Georgia Conference by designating your donation for UMCOR U.S. Disaster Response #901670 or directly at https://umcmission.org/advance-project/901670/

You can also assist survivors with your monetary blessings. Monetary donations will help with storm recovery needs in the days, weeks and months ahead. Funds for our South Georgia Conference Storm Recovery efforts can be given as follows:

  • Give through your local church. Your local church will then send the money to the Administrative Services Office.
  • Mail a check to the Administrative Services Office. Please use Conference Advance Special #6796 - South Georgia Storm Relief (Disaster Response) or UMCOR U.S. Disaster Response #901670.  Address: PO Box 7227, Macon, GA 31209.
  • Online donation
Thank you for giving! Financial gifts will make a significant impact on any current and future relief and long-term recovery efforts.
