Bankhead takes reins as UMW president

A member of Pierce Chapel United Methodist Church in Midland, Bankhead begins her two-year term on January 1. 
 

As a child and young teen, Bankhead attended Women’s Society of Christian Service (WSCS) meetings with her mother.  A member of UMW since her late teens, she has served every office in her local UMW unit, and has served at the Columbus District level as conference treasurer and spiritual growth coordinator. She also served on the nominating committee at the conference level, and was elected an alternate director to the women’s division.
 

Passionate about serving others, Bankhead serves on the board at Open Door Community House in Columbus and volunteers there one to two times per month.
 

One of Bankhead’s goals during her tenure as UMW president is to involve younger women in the ministry.
 

“I would like for younger women to be involved in the experience,” she said. “I have gotten a lot of fulfillment from being able to learn about women in other countries and in the United States who face the same issues and concerns that we do in our local churches, and helping them.”
 

Involvement in UMW provides women of all ages with opportunities to be spiritually uplifted, politically involved, and engaged in local issues and activities, she said.
 

“We pattern our goals off our purpose – to know God and being involved in missions,” Bankhead said.
