Disaster Response Teams Needed in Roberta, Ga
Recovery efforts are under way in Roberta after a powerful rotating thunderstorm tracked across 7 South Georgia counties Sunday, February 17, 2008 and spawned at least two confirmed tornadoes. The storm moved through Stewart, Chattahoochee, Marion, Taylor and Crawford counties and generated hurricane-force winds in Bibb and Jones counties.

The first tornado impacted Taylor County at 6 p.m. about a mile south of Mauk. Two mobile homes were destroyed and three other homes damaged. Another tornado touched down five miles southwest of Roberta, in Crawford County, carving an 8 mile long, 250 yard wide path of damage. With wind speeds of 105 mph, the tornado destroyed nine structures and damaged twelve others. Authorities in Crawford County reported eight injuries because of the storm. At least four homes were damages in the Macon area as a result of this same storm system.

GEMA and Red Cross staff and volunteers responded initially for assessment and early-response service. Since their departure, Crawford County officials have begun reaching out to church-affiliated agencies, specifically UMCOR and UM disaster teams to help with long-term recovery efforts. Pastors and mission lay leaders are encouraged to inform volunteer teams of this need.

Contact Rev. Nita Crump, Pastor at Roberta UMC at (478) 550-7091 or robertaumc@pstel.net for more information, or Rev. Scott Hagan, Conference Disaster Relief Coordinator (706) 582-2524 or scott@ellerslieumc.com.

2008 Annual Conference Special Offering: Touch the Present, Empower the Future
The Special Offering at the 2008 Session of the South GA Annual Conference Session will be used to support the work of the Georgia United Methodist Commission on Higher Education and Campus Ministry (GUMCHECM) within the South Georgia Conference. Visit the GUMCHECM website at www.gahied.com to learn more about the work of The Commission and the plans for the Special Offering!

One part of that offering will be used to provide support for the United Methodist leadership Scholars (UMLS) Program. UMLS is a jurisdictional initiative intended to encourage the enrollment in our United Methodist Colleges and Universities. For more information about UMLS please visit www.umls.umc.org.

The balance of your generous offering will be used to support the Wesley Foundation ministries of the South Georgia Conference. The needs vary all the way from work on deferred maintenance, new construction, property acquisition and support for student interns. Our Wesley Foundations provide the richest and most fertile field for call to ministry among young adults. The Wesley Foundation ministries in South Georgia find themselves in a hopeful and exciting place in their history. As we seek to make disciples for Jesus Christ, in South Georgia and around the globe, your support of this special offering will help us to offer that good work in fresh new ways on our college and University campuses.

Thank you for supporting the Special Offering at this year's Annual Conference Session. Your generous gifts and your prayers will help to connect our United Methodist tradition with a new generation of young women and men, and to make new disciples for Jesus Christ. We look forward to seeing you in Columbus and to celebrating what God is doing among us; as we “touch the present and empower the future” in Jesus name.

Gates, Sr. to Address United Methodist General Conference
(UMCom) William H. The gathering focused both inwardly and outwardly to examine the realities and challenges of following John Wesley's three general rules for a faithful Christian life: doing good, doing no harm and staying in love with God. BMCR represents more than 2,400 black United Methodist congregations and approximately 500,000 African-American United Methodists across the United States. The group serves as a forum for defining issues and develop strategies for change within The United Methodist Church. More>>

Thinking About a New Hymnal: What do we want?

(GBOD) The General Board of Discipleship has recommended to General Conference a new official hymnal for United Methodists in the USA. We have completed work on a four-year music and worship study for General Conference (report is available at www.gbod.org/worship/musicstudy), and GBOD is currently engaged in additional research regarding a new hymnal. General Conference will consider the proposal when it meets April 23-May 2, 2008, in Fort Worth, TX. The research conducted as part of the music and worship study as well as the continuing GBOD research has revealed much about what United Methodists think should and should not be included in a new hymnal. This article, the first of a series, discusses what United Methodists are thinking and saying.
