A Note from the Georgia United Methodist Commission on Higher Education and Campus Ministry
All of us are aware of the loss of youth and young adult membership in our United Methodist Church – but there are some very encouraging signs where youth are actively engaged in their local church ministries. And that is something for which to be grateful. But what happens when our youth leave home and go to college? There is encouraging news for youth leaders in this regard. In Georgia there are 23 Wesley Foundations on state campuses – we have 9 United Methodist colleges and universities – where the Wesley Foundation leaders and campus ministers have covenanted to contact any of your youth who come as freshmen to campus. If you need the name of the Wesley minister on campus, please call the Georgia Higher Education office – 800.392.2743. Please encourage your rising college freshmen to visit www.gbgm-umc.org/gumchecm. There they will find information regarding our ministry on campus, scholarship and loan information, in addition to a resource page notifying our campus ministers of their impending arrival. Help us help each other to keep our young people a vital part of the church's ministry.

Consultation explores global nature of church
(UMNS) The United Methodist Church is at work in more than 38 countries on four continents, and more than 20 percent of its members live outside the United States. Amid this increasingly global church environment, United Methodists are exploring what it means to be in mission worldwide and how it should shape its organizational structure accordingly. Fifty-five church leaders from four continents gathered May 18-20 at Simpsonwood Conference and Retreat Center to discuss issues related to global interdependence and interrelationships. The Consultation on the Global Nature of the Church was sponsored by the United Methodist Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious Concerns. More>>
General Conference host issues call to prayer
(UMNS) United Methodists around the world are asked to pray for God's guidance for the church in the time leading up to and during the denomination's 2008 legislative assembly. The Central Texas Annual (regional) Conference host committee, which is preparing for the assembly next spring in Fort Worth, has issued a "A Call to Prayer for General Conference 2008." "Just as prayer is as essential to the Christian life as breath, so prayer is essential to our shared life together as we prepare for General Conference 2008," the committee said in its call. "We on the General Conference Hosting Committee Prayer Ministries Team invite you to pray daily for General Conference 2008 and for all the preparations and deliberations leading up to it so that in all that we do we are 'rooted and grounded in love,'" the committee said. State of the Church report encourages dialogue
(UMNS) United Methodists have a deep love for their church and passion for their beliefs, but they are less satisfied with its structure and say too many resources are used in administration and bureaucracy. They are also both hopeful and concerned about the future of The United Methodist Church. So say the results of surveys that are the basis for a State of the Church report scheduled for churchwide release in mid-June. The surveys were conducted between June and September of 2006, and involved interviewing a cross-section of about 3,000 United Methodist clergy, lay leaders and members from across the globe. More>>
Gulfside on ‘deliberate' track to recovery
(UMNS) Gulfside Assembly, the historic United Methodist center in Waveland, Miss., is on a deliberate but not fast track as it continues to recover from Hurricane Katrina, according to the president of the board of directors. The nearly 85-year-old retreat center, built on 60 acres facing the Gulf of Mexico, was swept away when Hurricane Katrina cut a swath across the Gulf Coast in 2005. Volunteers are urgently needed to help with the cleanup, officials said. The Federal Emergency Management Agency will pick up the trash and debris collected at the site through June, and other arrangements for debris disposal are being considered Gulfside's board of trustees wants as much of the grounds cleared of debris as possible. Gulfside also needs groups of volunteers to pick up bottles, cans, pieces of wood, asphalt, small stones and the kinds of things that would get in the way of the lawn mowers and other equipment, said Abraham Carey, chairman of the building and grounds committee. RESOURCES
Liturgies provide comfort, support to service members
(UMNS) Duty places a heavy burden on military service members, and warriors need to feel their faith community shares that burden with them, says a Navy chaplain who has served in Iraq. The needs of service members leaving for and returning from Iraq and Afghanistan is the focus of a task force formed by the United Methodist boards of Church and Society and Higher Education and Ministry. As part of that effort, the Rev. Laura J. Bender, a Navy chaplain, has written two liturgies for congregations to use in services to bless the deploying soldier and welcome home the returning warrior. More>>
