Bishop B. Michael Watson
Bishop Mike Watson was born into an active Methodist family in Dothan, Alabama. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in finance and real estate from the University of Alabama, received a master of divinity degree from the Candler School of Theology and a doctor of ministry degree from Vanderbilt University.
In 1972 he was ordained deacon by Bishop W. Kenneth Goodson, and in 1976 he was ordained elder by Bishop Carl J. Sanders.
Bishop Watson served as pastor in Florida, as well as a founding pastor of Covenant United Methodist Church in his hometown of Dothan. From 1990 until his election to the episcopacy by the Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference in 2000, he served as the pastor of Dauphin Way United Methodist Church in Mobile, Alabama.
Bishop Watson currently serves as the episcopal leader of the South Georgia area and resides in Macon, GA. He is married to Margaret Lee Watson and has two children, Benjamin (Ben) Lee Watson and Elizabeth Watson Riddle. He is also a proud grandfather to Alex and Andrew. |

Dr. Vance Mathis, Assistant to the Bishop

Vance currently serves as clergy assistant to Bishop Watson as well as the Conference Director of Ministerial Services. Prior to this assignment, he was senior minister of First UMC Cordele, First UMC Americus, and Mulberry Street UMC. He also served as superintendent of the Savannah and Thomasville Districts. He is an alumnus of the Candler School of Theology of Emory University. Vance has served on various boards and agencies of the conference, including CFA, Board of Pension, and Board of Ordained Ministry. He is the past president of the South GA UM Foundation. He has been in the delegations of Jurisdictional and General Conferences. A retired Army chaplain, he is a graduate of the basic and advanced courses of the U.S. Army Chaplain School, the U.S. Army Management School, and Phase I of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. A Vietnam veteran with the First Infantry Division, he is the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal. Vance and his wife, Carol Mathis, are the parents of three married daughters and the proud grandparents of five grandchildren.

Mrs. Sandy Scaggs, Secretary to the Bishop

Sandy Scaggs serves as the Administrative Secretary to Bishop B. Michael Watson. She has served in the Bishop’s office since 1988 when South Georgia became a separate Episcopal Area. Prior to coming to the Episcopal Office Sandy worked as office manager at First UMC Warner Robins for 10 years. She was in the first General Council on Finance and Administration sanctioned certification class at Emory University and became a Certified UMC Secretary in 1986. Sandy was named the Georgia UMC Secretary of the Year in 1989-90. Sandy is married to Tom Scaggs and they have two grown sons, Tom and Scott, and 4 terrific grandchildren.
