Here at Utmost United Methodist Church we usually meet change with courage and good humor. Our pastor, Rev. Mostly Wright, says, “Here at Utmost United Methodist Church, we welcome change … except in the offering plate.” Those who know him recognize his tongue-in-cheek way of saying change is always a struggle.
The issue took up a large part of a recent Church Council meeting. Major Day said, “I think one of the most difficult challenges our church has faced is the electronic world that has enveloped us. Much of the challenge is that we have been reluctant to see the bigger picture.”
Rev. Wright said, “I must admit, our church is very comfortable with having ministry carried out in our accustomed ways. Our youth and young adults are leading us down exciting new paths. They use social media, smart phones, and computer technology as easily as we used to use the telephone! And … didn’t our parents and grandparents shudder at some of the things we did?”
Hezzie Tait said, “I’m not so sure we ought to jump on this bandwagon. These young people have short attention spans. Who knows, this whole thing might blow over after we spend time and money.”
Until next time...
