Obituary: Mrs. Margaret Carruth

Margaret Elizabeth Smith Carruth, age 101 years, died on March 7, 2023.  She was born on November 4, 1921, in Decatur County, Georgia to the late John Orson Smith and Gladys Willis Smith.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Reverend Edward H. Carruth, her sister, Mary Starr, and her son-in-law, Kenny Goode.
 
Mrs. Carruth was a graduate of Bainbridge High School.  She received a BA degree, magna cum laude, from Wesleyan College in 1942.  Mrs. Carruth earned a Master of Science degree from Emory University in 1944.  She was married to her husband, Edward, on December 31, 1946. 
 
As a devoted wife and mother, she supported her husband, who was a United Methodist minister.  Together, they served many appointments including Brewton Charge, Bloomingdale, Wesley Monumental (Savannah) - associate, Whitefield (Savannah), Mount Vernon, Lee Street (Americus), Lyons, Porterfield (Albany), Sandersville, Dublin District Superintendent, Cherokee Heights (Macon), and Warner Robins First UMC.  She was a faithful member of Dublin First United Methodist Church.  In retirement, she supported her husband as associate pastor in Mount Vernon and at Dublin First UMC.
 
Mrs. Carruth was involved in many service activities.  At times, she sang in the church choir, and for many years, she was the choir librarian.  She loved little children and often served in the nursery.  Mrs. Carruth was a long-time member and supporter of the United Methodist Women.  She was also active in support of Meals on Wheels.  For a number of years, she volunteered in the public schools as a tutor of elementary age students, particularly concerning their reading skills.
 
She is survived by three sons, Dr. Joseph E. Carruth (Camille) of Dublin, Georgia, E. Hampton Carruth, Jr. (Beth) of Batesville, Virginia, and John O. Carruth (Leslie) of Roswell, Georgia, a daughter, Katherine Carruth Goode of Columbia, S.C., a brother, Dr. J. Orson Smith, Jr. (Eleanor) of Tallahassee, Florida and a sister-in-law, Deb Carruth of Silver Spring. Maryland.  She is also survived by grandchildren Tom Carruth (Shelly), Elizabeth C. Barfoot (Adam), Kevin Carruth, Wade Carruth (Leighton), Clark Carruth, Deale Carruth (Ellie), Maggie C. O’Conner (Chris), Craig Link (Evelyn), and Sumter Link (Elizabeth).  Other survivors are great-grandchildren Joshua Barfoot, Nate Barfoot, Natalie Barfoot, Holland Carruth, Olivia Carruth, Preslie Carruth, Dax Carruth, Jim Carruth, Lucy Carruth, Lila Carruth, Josephine Carruth, Mac Link, Edward Link, and many nieces and nephews.
 
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, March 10, 2023, at Dublin First United Methodist Church with Reverend Keith Goodlett and Reverend Tom Carruth officiating. There will be a visitation in the sanctuary at 10 am.  The burial service will be at the Oak City Cemetery in Bainbridge, Georgia at 4:30 P.M. with Reverend Dr. Scott Hagan and the Reverend Kirk Hagan.
